Apple-Gouda Pigs in a Blanket

This is a wonderful, fun recipe to make from the TasteofHome; Apple-Gouda Pigs in a Blanket, and I just knew I had to try it. Furthermore, I love smoked Gouda and summer sausage on a Ritz, so why not in the dough and baked. As a matter of fact, I remember making these once before for my sister’s baby shower. Moreover, these are so quick and easy to make. However, if you are on a low-carb diet use bacon instead of the crescent rolls. What is Pigs in a Blanket?

  • In the first place, the phrase “pigs in a blanket” often refer to hot dogs, cocktails, or breakfast/link sausages wrapped in either a pre-made or homemade biscuit dough, pancake, croissant dough, and baked.
  • They are typically small in size and can be eaten in one or two bites. For this reason, they are usually commonly served as an appetizer or hors d’oeuvre, sometimes with a mustard or aioli dipping sauce.
  • In the United Kingdom, the term is commonly used for small sausages (usually chipolatas) wrapped in bacon
  • Pigs in a blanket are usually different from sausage rolls, which are a larger, more filling item served for breakfast and lunch in parts of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and, more rarely, the United States and Canada.

Origin of Pigs in a Blanket

Some historians write that pigs in a blanket date back to the 1600s. Furthermore, field laborers in England placed meat inside of dough to take with them to the fields for their lunches. Moreover, the earliest written record of this dish appeared in “Betty Crocker’s Cooking for Kids” which was published in 1957.

In addition, Pigs in a blanket (also pigs in blankets) are a variety of different sausage-based culinary dishes around the world. Not to mention, in the United States, it typically refers to hot dogs wrapped in croissant pastry. National Pigs in a Blanket Day is celebrated worldwide on April 24.
